It's Sew Simple

Creating a Simple Tube Dress Part 2

By Dolla

In Part 1 you learned to sew a simple tube dress. In this article you will learn to use that same pattern to make an overdress. Then I will show you how to use that same overdress to get different looks. So get ready.

Although these fashions can be sewn by machine or by hand we will be using a sewing machine.
Supplies

Basic dress - created in previous series.

sewing machine
matching thread
straight pins
scissors or rotary cutter
contrasting fabric 12" x 12"
doll
small piece of trim or ribbon
The overdress will be made using the same pattern used to create the dress in the previous series. Place it on the fold of the fabric and cut it out.

Fold and iron 1/4" of the short edges to prepare the top and bottom hems. Example #1. Sew the hem on the right side of the fabric. Example #2

Example #1 (shown horizontally)

Example #2

Turn the edges of the long sides under 1/4". Example #3. This is the front opening of the overdress. (Do not sew.)

Straps. Take a piece of ribbon or narrow trim and place it around the doll's neck. Pull the length to just under her chest. Cut. Example #4. This should be enough for straps. Cut that piece in half to make two straps. The straps will be tied behind her neck.

Place one strap under each fold of the fabric. Pin in place on the outside of the fabric. Example #5. Continue pinning down the front of both sides of the fabric. Sew a straight stitch down each side. Example #6.

That completes the overdress. Put it around the doll so it opens in the front. Crisscross the straps and tie in the back. See below.

Here are different views of what you can do with this fashion by adding a single closure to the front,
adding a wide belt or use the overdress as a cape. Add beads or other trim and you have a simple
pretty fashion.
